Common Cabinet Types
Base Units
Base units sit on the floor and typically hold either doors, drawers, or a combination of both. Common configurations include:
- Single door base unit – One door, usually with a shelf inside
- Double door base unit – Two doors side by side
- Drawer line base unit – Door below, drawer front above (the drawer front matches the door but hides the drawer box)
- Pan drawer unit – Deep drawers for pots and pans, usually three drawer fronts
Wall Units
Wall units are mounted above your worktop. They're usually shorter than base units and may have:
- Single door – Standard wall cupboard
- Double doors – Wider wall unit with two doors
- Bi-fold doors – Two narrow doors that fold back on themselves
Tall Units
Tall units run from floor to ceiling (or close to it). Common types include:
- Larder units – Full height storage with doors and internal shelving
- Oven housing – Space for built-in ovens with doors above and below
- Fridge/freezer housing – Integrated appliance housing with matching door fronts
Corner Units
Corner units make use of the space where two runs of cabinets meet:
- L-shaped corner base – Angled door or curved door to access the corner
- Blind corner unit – Standard door with hidden storage behind
- Corner wall unit – Angled or bi-fold doors for upper corner access
Drawer Configurations
Drawers come in various setups:
- Single drawer – One drawer front
- Three drawer stack – Three equal drawer fronts
- Four drawer stack – Four drawer fronts (often graduated sizes)
- Pan drawer – Deep drawers, usually two or three fronts
What's the Difference Between Doors and Drawer Fronts?
Doors attach to cabinet carcasses with hinges and swing open.
Drawer fronts attach to drawer boxes and pull out. They look the same as doors but are mounted differently.
When ordering, make sure you select the right product for your cabinet type. If you're unsure, give us a call.
What About End Panels and Plinths?
Most kitchens need more than just doors:
End panels – Cover the exposed sides of cabinets at the end of a run. They match your doors and give a finished look.
Plinths – The kick boards that run along the bottom of base units, hiding the legs. Usually supplied in lengths you cut to fit.
Cornice and pelmet – Decorative trim that frames wall units at the top (cornice) and bottom (pelmet).
Filler pieces – Narrow strips used to fill gaps between cabinets and walls or appliances.
How to Measure for Replacement Doors
If you're replacing existing doors:
- Remove an old door – Take it off the hinges
- Measure the width – Left to right, in millimetres
- Measure the height – Top to bottom, in millimetres
- Note the hinge position – Left or right hand opening
- Check for drilling – Do you need hinge holes pre-drilled?
Always measure the actual door, not the cabinet opening.
Standard Kitchen Door Sizes
Most kitchen doors come in standard sizes:
Base unit doors:
- 300mm, 400mm, 450mm, 500mm, 600mm wide

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just replace the doors without changing the cabinets? Yes – that's exactly what we're here for. If your cabinet carcasses are in good condition, new doors can transform your kitchen for a fraction of the cost of a full refit.
How do I know what size drawer fronts I need? Measure your existing drawer fronts, or measure the drawer box opening and add the overlay (the amount the front overlaps the cabinet). If in doubt, call us.
Do I need to replace the hinges? Not always. If your existing hinges are standard 35mm concealed hinges and in good condition, they should work with new doors. If they're old or worn, it's worth replacing them.
What if my cabinets aren't standard sizes? Many of our door ranges are available in made-to-measure sizes. Contact us with your requirements and we'll advise what's possible.
Can you help me work out what I need? Absolutely. If you're struggling to identify your cabinet types or work out your door requirements, give us a call on 0161 465 4007 – we're happy to help.
